The Greendale High School Musicians have an incredible idea to help a group of people who are less fortunate than we are. One day, our band director showed the band and orchestra a video from 60 minutes regarding a recently discovered orchestra. This orchestra has been around for over 15 years and, until recently, no one knew about them, even though they are roughly the same size as our marching band (around 200 people). This group originates from Kinshasa in the Congo.
They are a group that began with one man's idea for an orchestra in one of the poorest countries in the world. Since they began, the orchestra has grown into a full symphony more quickly than anyone could ever imagine. These people have played their music over the years with a limited number of instruments, which have either been donated to them or rescued from being broken. In this impoverished country, they do not have the luxury we do of acquiring new instruments frequently or if they break, fixing them without a problem. In this country, these people must protect what little they have been blessed with, because if one of the instruments is broken or lost, who knows when they might get a replacement; if ever.
This group of amazing musicians left us speechless after we saw how talented they had become, especially because they come from a background of absent wealth with few material possessions. They have taken what little they have and turned it into something extraordinary. We were so moved by their work over the last 15 years that we wish to help spur on this group to even greater heights.
There is a piano for sale here in Greendale that we believe this group would love to have in their orchestra. We see this a great opportunity to, as an entire music department, support this group of musicians that should be role models to all of us musicians with their hard work and determination.
We wish to buy this piano and send it to them, but for this to be accomplished, we ask that anyone who has seen their performance (the link is available on this site) to help us purchase and ship this piano to them. A donation button can be found on the home page of this site and also on a tab above, but donations may also be given in person. This is an extraordinary chance to give to those who have significantly less than we do.
Thank you in advance for your support for these people. If you wish to know more about Greendale High School and what we do in our music department, links to our Band, Orchestra and Choir can be found on the home page or you can contact us to get to know us better. Contact information can be found on the home page or you can send us your message on the "contact us" page.
